Bled is an Alpine town and is one of the oldest and most beautiful tourist destinations in Slovenia. Bled is a small heaven of tranquility with dominating scenery of lake, mountains, and peeks of the churches, island and castle. Its main attraction is the crystal-clear lake which surrounds Bled Island
. This is the only island in Slovenia, and it harbors many legends and invites guests to visit the church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary
. It is the Wishing Bell
that gets the most attention, since it can make Your wishes come true, or so it is said. Separate from the church itself, we will visit the Bell Tower that is situated on the island as well. We will get to the island by the Traditional Pletna Boat
, which has a history stretching back to the 16th century. Bled also offers such delightful attractions as going up to the Bled Castle
, taking an easy stroll around the lake or giving in and trying the best local desert called Bled crème cake.
Only 4 km away from Bled is the Vintgar gorge. Radovna river
, its waterfalls, pools and rapids, the vertical rocks of Hom and Boršt
blend in wonderfully into the Vintgar gorge. Walking through this gorge will leave You speechless. It is located approximately 4 km north-west of Bled and was discovered by Jakob Žumer, the Mayor of Gorje, and the cartographer and photographer Benedikt Lergetporer in 1891. The wooden educational trails stretch across 1.6 km long Vintgar gorge and end with a bridge overlooking the mighty 13-metre-high Šum waterfall
. On the way to see the waterfall, guests will be delighted to see the single-arch stone bridge of the Bohinj railway
, constructed in 1906 and the dam
from which the water is routed to the small Vintgar hydroelectric power plant under the Šum waterfall.
